Baby Shower gifts

“These baby shower gifts are so much fun and unique for any special baby-to-come!”

When it comes to unique new baby gifts, what do you expect?

For those arranging the baby shower, it can be a lot of fun setting up beautifully themed baby shower decorations and preparing the seating and side dishes, along with the most important part – the gift table.

So how does a guest make sure that their baby shower presents are both remembered and treasured?

Although there are useful baby gifts, they are lacking in fun, uniqueness and will quickly be forgotten by the mom-to-be when her bundle of joy comes into the world.

Baby Shower Gifts For Baby

Baby Blanket Gift

Baby Blanket

Baby blankets are useful and gorgeous. A personalized baby blanket gift is perfect not only for the mom who needs everything for her darling newborn, but also for the mom who has everything.

Every baby needs a gorgeous blanket that they can rest their head on. Giving a special, custom-made blanket is a memorable gift that can grow with the child. This is the type of gift that they can have as a keepsake for a lifetime.

Every mom-to-be will undoubtedly receive a whole pile of receiving blankets. While these are helpful for the first few months, they can’t really grow with the child or stand the test of time. A larger blanket made of fleece and ribbon trim makes such a beautiful statement and can really stay with the child as they outgrow their smaller counterparts. These blankets aren’t just functional, but also gorgeous too.

The SwaddleMe

SwaddleMe wrap

The ingenious SwaddleMe wrap is a relative newcomer to the baby gift market, but so many new parents swear by it that it’s well worth consideration.

If you’ve ever watched one of the hospital nurses wrap a newborn with the mind-bending swiftness that only comes with practice, you can surely appreciate the usefulness of putting this gift on your list! The clever SwaddleMe wrap takes the place of a simple receiving blanket. For new, sleep-deprived parents, the struggle to swaddle a squirmy, howling baby the traditional way is not a skill easily learned, yet the baby tends to expect perfection the first time. Enter the SwaddleMe. Simply position the baby in the center and the folds fasten with Velcro for a perfect swaddle every time!

Even better, it’s one of those items you can’t have too many of. One leaky diaper and the thing is out of commission until it can be washed and dried, so in this case parents will be grateful for duplicate gifts!

The Moses Basket

When you select baby shower party gifts, it helps to keep the practical part of life with a newborn in mind. When you consider those day-to-day tasks, the Moses Basket becomes an obvious winner! New moms favor bassinets because newborns seem to be calmed by the smaller spaces, but even a bassinet isn’t usually portable. The Moses Basket is!

One baby snuggles down to sleep in this adorable basket, parents can easily move him or her around from room to room. Anxious moms can do household chores, prepare meals, and even take one of those elusive new-mommy showers, all while keeping her newborn by her side. The gift of not having to worry – or wake a sleeping baby – is priceless, which makes this gift well worth the price!

The ITZBEEN Baby Care Timer

The ITZBEEN Baby Care Timer

If you’ve spent any amount of time with a newborn, you can appreciate the ITZBEEN Baby Care Timer!

This clever gadget makes it easy for sleep-deprived parents to know exactly how long it has been since the last feeding, diaper change, and nap. It also has a bonus setting that you can use for other options such as medication or special needs.

Unless you’ve actually been a new mom, it’s hard to fully explain the impact of this clever tool. Nursing moms worry endlessly that their babies have enough milk, and to complicate matters they have to remember which side the baby nursed from last.

The ITZBEEN Baby Care Timer will remember for her even when she can’t! When the days run on endlessly – and sleeplessly – this tool will make new parents feel like they’re doing things right. That’s an amazing gift, especially for folks who haven’t slept in days!

Baby Shower Gifts For Mom

These gift ideas may be a bit out of the ordinary, but that’s what makes them so much fun! When you need a baby shower gift for mom, you can bet she’ll appreciate any one of these smart gift suggestions.

The Everyday BellaBand

It’s a common perception the Everyday BellaBand is only useful during early pregnancy, when the regular clothes get a bit too snug and the maternity clothes seem too drastic.

If you’re not familiar with it, the BellaBand is a remarkably clever wrap – sort of a wide stretchy belt – which allows mom-to-be to wear her pre-pregnancy clothing. When she puts it on, she can leave her old jeans unbuttoned without a so-called wardrobe malfunction in the works. It’s a beloved addition to the wardrobe of a newly pregnant mom!

Why, then, is it a good new mother gift? After all, by the time the baby shower rolls around, the mom-to-be is usually solidly into maternity clothing! The trick in this case is to get the new mom out of maternity clothes and back into her regular clothes as quickly and as comfortably as possible.

That is one incredible gift! If she already owns a BellaBand she is still likely to appreciate a new one, as the old one probably stretched out quite a bit as her tummy grew.

Bebe au Lait Nursing Cover

Nursing can be difficult for new moms and babies alike, and it’s a huge source of frustration and, often, anxiety for nursing mothers. Modesty is a frequent concern for frazzled new mothers, particularly when their little ones pick busy public venues to require a feeding.

Created just for those situations, the Bebe au Lait Nursing Cover is a wonderful baby shower gift and baby feeding time!

The design of the Bebe au Lait Nursing Cover includes a rigid top edge to maintain an opening – and a connection – between mom and baby. The lightweight design provides full coverage without overheating, and it makes a great extra blanket in a pinch.

But perhaps most of all it allows a new mom to mother without embarrassment, and that’s a wonderful gift in itself.

A Little Something for Mama to Be

The name of this gift says it all! When most folks choose a baby shower gift for mom, it’s really for the baby.

A Little Something for Mama to Be bucks the trend to provide new moms with a gift of indulgence. She’s pampered her baby all these months, and it’s time for her to pamper herself!

There are few moms-to-be who wouldn’t appreciate a little TLC for those swollen, tired feet.

Itchy stretch marks are no match for the Stretch Oil, and new mommies truly deserve the lift they’ll get from the lip balm. And because these products are all natural and Earth-friendly, this is a gift she’ll wonderful about.

Baby Shower Gifts For Dad

Don’t make dad feel left out at the baby shower! Instead, choose one of these awesome new father gifts he’s sure to love!

The Frog Pod

This is a fabulous choice of baby shower gifts for dad, and not just because dads like creepy crawly amphibians. In fact, this Frog Pod couldn’t be any cuter, but that’s not what makes it the perfect gift!

When the baby comes it often seems like falls under mom’s territory, and new dads often end up clueless as to how they can help.

This is particularly true for nursing infants, and one of the best ways for dad to help out mom and forge his own bond with the baby is by taking over bath time.

This darling Frog Pod has just enough guy appeal to provide the no-frills help he needs to get the job right. With space for tub toys to drain and dry properly plus room for shampoo and other gear, this unique gift is sure to make a splash!

Skip Hop Dash Deluxe Diaper Bag

It may have a long name, but this clever Skip Hop Dash Deluxe Diaper Bag has mass guy appeal!

It comes in a huge selection of colors, but odds are pretty good that when you’re looking for baby shower gifts for dad, green camo will hit the spot.

If dad is a bit more reserved, there are plenty of other muted tones that won’t scream frills attached – chocolate and charcoal just to name a couple.

Another guy-friendly trait of the Skip Hop Dash Deluxe Diaper Bag is the assortment of eleven pockets and zippered compartments. The average dad doesn’t specialize in the dozens of pint-sized gadgets, gizmos, and accessories a baby might need while they’re on the go, so a straight shot to the diaper portion of the diaper bag is likely to score major points with him!

Harley Davidson Roaring Softail Rocker

Not every man feels at home in the nursery, so few new father gifts will rev his motor like this one will!

The Harley Davidson Roaring Softail Rocker is the perfect gift for the guy who is in touch with his wild side.

Fatherly instincts will go into overdrive when he introduces his little guy – or girl – to this rockin’ bike with real Harley sounds!

And this cool gift comes with a bonus: with a new baby in the house this might be as close to a real Harley as dad is going to get. He might not brag to his buddies about this Harley, but you can bet he’ll bond with his little one over his or her first real “hog!”.

Maybe you’ve already had your answer in heart…

However, let me tell you the answers about how to turn a long standing US tradition into a wonderful theme based baby shower for adoptive parents and their adopted baby.

Basic Entiquettes For Adoption Baby Shower

Consult, Consult and Consult!

Why consultation is so important? Because there are many differences you should consider when attempting to throw a baby shower for adoption.

First of all, the age of the adopted child is very important.

Your friends may have adopted a infant, but other couples may have adopted a older child or even a teenager. And the answer of “how to plan a baby shower” varies in big differences from adopting a infant to adopting a 5 year old. So don’t get it wrong!

And for the shower timing, check with the adoptive parents to see when the child is to arrive.

It is always good that the new parents can give you their ideal timing for the party, whether before or after the child is adopted.

The shower timing for a newborn’s arrival could be before or after the big day. This also give the guests a chance to introduce the child to their extended family and friends.

Another baby shower idea is making a M&M; costume. Cut two large circles out from the cardborad. Then draw on “m&m;” onto both circles using spray paint (any color of M&M;’s). Use heavy duty string to attach the 2 pieces together and hang over shoulders of a black sweatsuit, sign style.

One of the very special christmas ideas for baby showers is to decorate your party area with ceramic angles, angels in snowshakers, feathers, cotton batten, and stars made out of aluminum foil.

Need a place to host a Halloween party but don’t have enough space?  What about converting your garage into a party room or making it a Haunted House?  I am embarassed to show the world how messy our garage was but watch how easily it can be converted into a useable space for Halloween.  The converted space served as a dual purpose – after the party was over, we used it as a Haunted house for trick-or-treaters. Tools:

  1. Screwdriver, either electric or manual.
  2. Heavy duty stapler
  3. Hammer
  4. Scissors

Step 2. Clean up.

Garage Maker over clean step 2Picture 2.  Clean up your garage.  This one is an obvious one but clean up as much junk as possible.  This is a good time to throw things away, donate items or have a garage sale! While I was at it, I decided to also repaint the concrete floor since it was full of art work and drawings from my kids and their friends from the previous summer. (We let each kid paint their own square with acrylics for some fun art time.)  The garage is starting to look much better now, thank goodness!

Step 3. Cover walls and hide all the junk.

Garage maker halloween over step 3

Picture 3. Cover the walls and hide the junk.  Many of the items in our garage we actually did not have take out.  Everything was tightly packed against the walls and a gossamer wall was used to cover the mess.  More about this in our next picture.  Any items too large to stay, remove from your garage.  Now hang wire around the perimeter of your garage with the heavy duty metal wire.   It doesn’t have to be exactly the same height or perfect.  Remember, it will be dark and no one will notice.

Tip: The good thing about the wire is it’s fairly unobtrusive and “invisible” so you can leave it up until next Halloween.  So you won’t have to set this one up again.

Garage maker Halloween over step 4

Picture 4. Gossamer Walls – Put up cobblestone gossamer walls by folding the fabric over the wire at the top and stapling it together.  Gossamer comes in solid colors or patterned colors.  It also comes in various widths and lengths.  For our 2 car garage, one roll of gossamer 60″ wide x 50 yard length is enough to cover the walls completely.  If you need extras to create interior walls or if you have a larger garage, order extra.  It is light and airy so it won’t weigh down the top wire.  This is all you need to hold up the walls for the perimeter of your garage.  We set up the walls a few days before Halloween so whenever we needed stuff from behind the gossamer wall, we just pulled aside the curtain.

Length of fabric.  The length of the cobblestone gossamer fabric should be about the same as the height from the top of your wire frame to the floor with about 3″ in hem allowance.

length of cobblestone gossamer = (height of wire frame + 3″)

Tip: Space the staples for the gossamer “hem” far apart so that when it’s time to put away all your decorations, gently pull off the staples from the gossamer and reuse for the following year!

Step 4. Create interior walls.

{Optional} This is an optional step if you want to have interior walls for your haunted house.  Personally, I prefer at least several walls to create interest and to give me the ability to decorate different nooks and crannies.  However, if you wish to leave your haunted house wide open, skip this step.

Garage maker Halloween over step 5

Picture 5. Create inside rooms. Now it’s time to get creative.  Figure out how you would like the inside of your haunted house to look.  Will it be a maze, or just have a few walls on the inside?  Just remember, for every wall you add you will need a long strip of wood to start off with.  If the wall is extra long use two or several strips of wood to form your wall.  You will be basically hanging gossamer off these wooden slats, and hanging the slats from the ceiling with wires attached to “O hooks”.  So after you have measured off the length for your wall and wooden slat, drill holes into the wood about 2 feet apart from each other.  Since the wood and gossamer fabric is pretty light, you won’t need much support to hold up these walls.  Screw the O hooks into holes that you just pre-drilled.

Garage maker Halloween over step 6

Picture 6. Black Gossamer.   Turn the slats over and fasten black gossamer fabric using your heavy duty stapler on the other side of the wooden strip.  Staple the entire strip.  The length of the black gossamer fabric should be about the same as the height from the top of your wire frame to the floor with about 3″ in hem allowance.

length of black gossamer = (height of wire frame + 3″)

Garage maker Halloween over step 7

Picture 7. Layers of mystery. The black gossamer turned out pretty see through and not dark enough for my haunted house, so I added some black landscape fabric or Weedblock.  I liked how it turned out with two layers of fabric since the Weedblock was too shiny so the gossamer gave it a soft gauzy effect, looked creepy especially when the wind blew, and gave the wall some movement.

Garage maker Halloween over ceiling

Picture 8. Hang Walls. Drill a hole in the ceiling in the spot where you want to hang your gossamer wall.  Line up the O hook you will be putting in the ceiling with the O hook on your wooden slat.  Insert plastic wall anchors and then screw in O hooks into the ceiling hole.  Loop through some floral wire or metal wire through the O hooks and tie off securely.  Loop the other end of the wire through the O hook of the wooden slat.  Tie off and secure.  Continue doing this until the entire wall is up and hanging. (see picture).

Ceiling. {Optional} Once the interior walls are up you can hang several drapes of leftover gossamer from gossamer wall to gossamer wall so the ceiling is not so white and blends in with the rest of the haunted house.   What I did was cut up some gossamer into strips and hung them from wall to wall. It creates the same illusion of a ceiling but you don’t need to use as much material.

Step 5. Halloween props and decorations.

Garage maker Halloween Entrance

Picture 9. Props. Now it’s time for the fun part!  Set up props as you wish in various corners, rooms and heights.  Yes, don’t forget the ceiling as well.  Any which way to haunt and surprise visitors. Spiders, ghosts and flying bats are great props for the ceiling!

Step 6. Lighting, sound and fog:

Garage maker Halloween Scene

Picture 10. Lighting.  Don’t forget about lighting.  Lighting can create a dramatic effect without much effort.  Up lights, spot lights, flicker lights, electric candles, strobe lights, black lights, etc. all work well.

Garage maker Halloween Living room

Picture 11. Music. Music also adds to the drama and scare factor as visitors enter the dark room and don’t know what to expect.

The two old chairs in the first picture were draped with old curtains and plopped a few skeletons on top.  A big pirate flag covered a lamp that was too pretty.  This room became one of the favorite hangouts.

Garage maker Halloween buffet

Picture 12. Fog.  Add a fog machine to make things more mysterious.

This is the bar area.  A temporary bar was made out of two metal planters and a wooden door.  Just place some more black garden weedblock on it and cover.

Step 7. Enjoy!

Garage maker Halloween Food table

Picture 13.  Food table.  We set up the food on a temporary buffet table.  Hung two iron chandeliers from the ceiling with candles in them.

Before an After garage

Picture 14.  Top left.  Entrance to the haunted house.  Top right.  More props at the entrance.  My brother would then pop out from behind the wall at the entrance and scare everyone since most are just staring at the mask and display so they are caught off guard!  Bottom left.   I received a shipment from Shindigz for the gossamer (long box) and used it to make a coffin and mummy.  Just drape a whole bunch of gauze strips in the center, place a mask on top and add lights under the gauze to make it shine through and look ghostly.  Stood up the mummy for more visual height and to create more of an impact.  Bottom right.   Used bottle labels from Michaels craft stores to dress up the bottles and added some snakes as decoration.

Usable Space. When the entire garage was finished it felt so good!  We have never seen our garage so clean before and we actually enjoyed hanging out in the garage!  Neighbors and friends would come over and it became a fun gathering place.  It was as if we added a large entertainment room to our house and one where we didn’t have to worry about spilled drinks or crumbs on the floor! Gotta love that!

Easy Storage.  The best thing about the gossamer is that it lasts for several Halloweens.  We’ve had ours for 3 years and it is still holding up.  I gently pull them off the top wire frame being careful not to tear them, and just fold away and store for next year.  It folds flat and compact and does not take up a lot of space.  What’s left standing is the wire frame that can just be left up for the next year.

Hope you’ve enjoyed my haunted house set up and would love to see yours!

Happy Halloween!

How ’bout a Wacky Science Party for a Kids’ Birthday?  Kids love doing hands-on experiments that oozes, fizzles and go karplunk!  What better way to learn by having fun!  These science activities do not have to be for parties alone, do them at home just for fun, for class projects, or for a science fair!

Science birthday Party Ideas

Science Birthday Party Ideas

1.Science Party Invitations

  • Wacky Scientists. Every Wacky Science Party needs Wacky Scientists!  In the instruction to your guests, instruct them to come with their hair sticking up like a mad scientists.  Use clip art of mad scientists as your party invitations.  The write-up for the science party invitation could say: “Come On Over For Some Wacky Science Fun at …………’s Mad Lab!
  • Test Tubes. Use test tubes with screw caps to mail your invitations.  Print out party information on pieces of paper and roll it into a small tube. You can mail them in padded yellow envelopes or hand deliver.
  • Personalized Rocket Invitations. Have rocket invitations made with your kid’s name for a custom look.  This is an easy option and a great way to customize your invitations without having to make the science party invitations yourself.  Invitations are printed on quality card stock with bright, vibrant colors.  No minimum order required and less than a $1 per invitation.
  • Recycled Paper Towels. Use recycled paper to make miniature rockets with card stock fins, bodies made out of paper towel rolls, streamers as exhaust, and build a nose using silver duct tape and card stock. Write the invitation on the outside of the rocket: “Ready For A Blast at ……….’s 6th Birthday Party!? You can use the miniature rockets as party decor as well by hanging them from the ceiling with fish wire.  Hang several of them all over the party room.

2.Science Party Decorations

  • Bio Hazard. Decorate the party room and entrance with bio hazards signs, posters, and caution tapes.
  • Sanitizing Area. Use white or silver streamers and hang them in front of the door like a curtain.  Section a small area at the entrance with another curtain of streamers before kids enter the party room.  This is the so-called ‘sanitizing area’ before kids are allowed to leave or enter the party room.  When they arrive, they are required to put on safety gear and have a security check (see Guest arrival).
  • Mad Scientist Lab Room. Set up the party room with beakers, microscopes, test tubes, and lots of old jars filled with grow toys like hands, brains and feet.  Get spider webbing from Halloween stores and drape around the shelves, tables and science area.
  • Beaker Containers. Fill various size beakers with colored candy like jelly beans, pop rock, skittles, etc.  for a colorful display.  Use beakers instead of cups at the party table, as vases, to hold utensils, etc.
  • Test tube trays. Place a rack of test tubes with 5 empty test tubes for each place setting.  Fill trays of beakers with colored drinks and label them with funny, gross or unusual labels, like “Polymer Insanity”, “Hydrogen Destruction”, etc. Some colored drinks you could use are blue Gatorade, green Sports drinks, purple Kool-Aid, etc.  Let kids mix their own drink in each test tube and use the test tube as their mini cup.
  • Eerie Fumes. Use dry ice in test tubes or use a fog machine to create the sense of mystery in your science lab.
  • Hydrodynamics Kool-Aid. For an extreme sense of fun and wackiness, set up a hydrodynamic system with Kool-Aid.  Let the kids, open and close valves, configure piping, and physics to create the ultimate Kool-Aid serving machine.  Perhaps have several colored Kool-Aid in different tanks and let them mix to see what tastes best!

3.Science Party Guest Arrival and Introduction

  • Lab Coats. Since kids will be entering a Hazard Zone it is best to put on disposable lab coats before they enter the danger zone or get button-downed shirts from thrift or consignment stores.  If they are too long, fold up the sleeves or cut off some length with scissors.  Another idea is to get large white inexpensive oversized white t-shirts in bulk and cut them open in front so kids can wear over their clothing to prevent spills, stains and to use as lab coats.
  • Safety Goggles. Give all kids safety goggles to wear.  It may be cheaper to buy swim goggles and give them out as party favors or ask kids to bring their own.
  • Badge Clearance. Check to make sure guest have security clearance to enter the “Security Sensitive” or “Bio Hazard” area.  Once they have been cleared by a strict security officer (parent), give them a badge.  The badges can be made out of card stock with their picture printed on it.  Set up an area to take their pictures and print out on cardstock. Let them decorate with stickers, markers, etc. while they wait for others to arrive.  Get clip on badge holders to attach to their lab coats.

4.Science Party Crafts, Experiments and Activities

  • Baking Soda Rocket. Do an experiment with Baking Soda Rocket using a kit.  Easy to assemble, just add baking soda and vinegar.  Rocket shoots up to 100 feet high and can be reused over again.  This is guaranteed to be the highlight of the party.
  • Slime, Flubber or Goop. Make your own Slime, Flubber, or do they call it Goop?!  Kids love the squishy and slimy feel of slime and will giggle and squirm as they handle the slime.
  • Paper Mache Volcano. Make your own Paper Mache Volcano out of paper mache using recycled strips of newspaper, flour and water.  Simply shape a volcano using strips of sheets dipped into the paste and draping over the volcano.  Complete Paper Mache Volcano instructions.
  • Homemade Play Dough. Make Homemade Playdough with kids and give them rolling pins, cookie cutters, garlic presses, forks, butter knives, etc. to make their own creations.
  • Alka Seltzer Grenade. Make grenades using empty water bottles, Alka Seltzer (antacid) and Vinegar.
  • Coke and Mentos. The classic coke and mentos experiment that kids always love. Watch as Coke reacts with the mentos and propels out of the bottle using the geyser tube. You can drop the mentos with a tube (make your own) or use a mentos tube with trigger to do the experiment.
  • Egg Bridge Challenge. Give kids 20 straws, 10 pieces of tape and one raw egg.  Need I say more?  Let them try to make an egg bridge to support the weight of the egg.  Who ever has the highest height without breaking the egg, wins!
  • Egg In A Bottle. Try to get the egg into the bottle using the law of physics by heating the bottle with a match (this can be done by placing hot water in the bottle).
  • Make Snow. Add water to snow polymer to make artificial snow.  Good experiment to show how chemicals react and change shape.
  • Acid/Base Testing. Test various liquids using acid/base paper.  Determine the pH of certain liquids and foods.
  • Lava Lamps. Create miniature lava lamps using the baby bottle test tubes, oil, food coloring, glitter, trinkets, and alka seltzer tablets.
  • Balloon Surfing. Make a balloon surfboard and have fun trying to balance and surf the waves.

5.Science Party Recipes

  • Fruit Molecules. Get maraschino cherries, melon balls, grapes, and melon balls, and use tooth picks to connect the different fruit to each other in the shape of molecules.
  • Deviled Nucleus. Make deviled egg and place a whole black olive in each one to represent the nucleus of a cell.
  • Periodic Table. Make sandwiches and cut off the crust.  Cut into four so that you have four small squares.  Make at least 20-40 small sandwiches depending on the size of your crowd or what other food you will be serving.  Arrange the squares like the elements on a Periodic Table Chart.  Use colored softened cream cheese to pipe on the element symbols and numbers. If an element belongs to an orange category, for example, pipe it using orange colored cream cheese, etc.  Print out a large periodic table on a sheet, place wax paper on top, then use that as a place mat to place your sandwiches on top. Place on the table and tell kids “It’s time to eat the Table!”  You might draw some surprising looks from kids who do not know what a periodic table is but what a fun way to introduce this concept to new budding scientists!
  • Cheese Ball Virus. Get a large clear glass or plastic plate and use acrylic paint to paint the “wrong side” or bottom to look like a cell.  When dry, use the “right” side to place cheese balls on it.  Tell kids that the cheese ball virus is attacking the cells and we need to annihilate them.  Give them toothpicks to conquer the task.
  • Make Your Own Butter. Get some whipping cream (liquid form in carton) and a clean glass jar with a lid.  If the cream has been sitting in the fridge, take it out and let it come to room temperature.  Fill half the jar, and shake, and shake, and shake some more. Let the kids take turns shaking the jar.  Eventually the cream will become butter.  Drain the liquid out and what’s left is butter.  Spread on toast that you have shaped and cut out like long test tubes.

Tip: Do not used colored toothpicks since they contain a coloring agent that will color the food.

6.Science Party Cakes and Desserts

  • Make Your Own Ice Cream. Use a Ball Ice Cream maker to make your own ice cream.  Put rock salt in the outer container and your ice cream ingredients in the inner container.  Screw cap on and tighten lid.   Sit in a circle facing each other, play some fun music and roll the ball back and forth for 15-20 minutes.  After the time period the ingredients should turn into soft ice cream.  Give each kid a clean spoon for a taste test.  Of course the ice cream is not enough to feed a crowd, so have extra ice cream on hand afterwards!
  • Mini Volcanoes. Get mini bundt cake pans and make miniature volcanoes by topping the center with ice cream, strawberry syrup (lava) and fudge.  Place sparkling candles in the middle to simulate the explosion.
  • Flask Cake with Cotton Candy Smoke. Make a flash cake complete with cotton candy smoke!  For more science recipes go here.
  • Brain-iac Cake. Make a brain cake!  Bake a cake and trim off corners to make it look like a half-round.  Use icing and pipe squiggly icing all over to look like a brain.
  • Petrie Dishes. Get clean petrie dishes and pour in jello.  Place a gummy worm in each one and let it set.

7.Science Party Games

  • Periodic Table Elements Scavenger Hunt. Print out the colored version and black and white version of the Periodic Table from ChemistryGuide.org.  Cut up the colored rectangles of the colored Periodic Table and scatter them throughout the house before the party.  Let the kids know that “….the Periodic Table of Elements has lost all its colors! Please help us find them!…” Give kids each a bag to collect the colored elements.  Gather the kids together and call out the elements by name to see who has a certain element like Barium, Iron, Iridium, etc.
  • Slime Fishing. Get a large bowl and place small plastic fish and trinkets in the bottom. Place also a special toy, like a small treasure chest in the bottom.  The treasure chest is the “prized possession” . Fill a large bucket with slime and blind fold a group of kids.  Start the timer for 60 seconds and let the kids fish out as many trinkets as possible with one hand.  The more they get, the more they can keep. This activity does get messy so either play outdoors or use a large plastic sheet to protect the play areas.

8.Science Party Favors

  • Test Tubes Pop Rock. Use test tubes with screw caps to hold Pop Rock Candy.  Tie a thank you tag to the top of the tube that says “You Rock! Thank You For Coming!”
  • Sour Powder Candy Test Tubes. Give each guest a test tube filled with sour powder candy.  This is a kids’ favorite and comes already filled either in solid colors or striped colors.  Exprience flavors like Xtreme Tangerine, Melon Madness, Double Sour, etc. and let the candy color your tongue!
  • Test Tubes Experiments. Get test tubes filled with experiments and instructions for kids to take home to further their interest in science. The kit comes with 5 various experiments : (1) Grow color-changing jelly crystals, (2) How to make gooey worms, (3) Write with disappearing ink, (4) Blow touchable bubbles, and (5) Make your own bouncy ball.  Divide the kit up so that one child gets one tube.
  • Glitter Putty. This glitter putty has wonderful iridescent rainbow colors and is another favorite among kids.  The glitter putty comes in egg shell containers so it can be safely stored and reused.
  • Space Shuttle Box. Get a space shuttle box filled with space favors.  Each space shuttle favor box comes with a space glider, glow star, space shuttle lollipop, glow stick and a Space Mission stickers.  It couldn’t be easier!
  • Hazardous Waste Treat Bag.  Make a simple science party treat bag out of a black gift bag and by sticking a toxic waste patch to the front of it.  The patch could also be used as a Boy Scout or Girl Scout badge if the party is for a Troop.

Robot Birthday Party Ideas

1.Robot Party Invitations

Robot party invitations
  • Robot Birthday Invitations or Thank You Notes. Popular online stores like  Birthday In A Box, Birthday Express, and Tiny Prints have a wide assortment of robot birthday invitations available for you to choose from.  They range from easy fill-in invitations to those that are a bit more personalized and custom.  For highly customized options, try Zazzle.com or Etsy.com. as well.
  • Make Your Own Robot Invitations. You can also easily make your own invitation by using clip art, custom stock images, stickers, or stamps to embellish or decorate card stock.  This option does take more time and creativity, however, if your child is old enough, they can also help you by decorating the invitations, filling out some of the party details, putting on the stamps, etc.

2.Robot Party Decorations

Decorating Details:

  • Bold Boy Colors. The main theme colors were bright royal blue and orange, sprinkled with various shades of complimentary colors like light blue, yellow, red and steel gray.  The color theme has been carried out beautifully throughout the entire party from the party table, the decorations, the welcome signs, and even the adorable robot favor tags!
  • Table Basics. A solid white table cloth was used to cover the party table, topped with a blue runner on top.
  • Robot Birthday Banner. A Birthday Banner with a Robot theme decorated the front of the table.  This fun banner was made out of paper with each banner piece made to look like machine gears in various colors. So clever!
  • Cupcake Centerpiece. In the center of the party table a tiered server with cupcakes served as the centerpiece.  Cupcake liners in steel gray were filled with cupcakes iced in bright blue and orange icing to match the party theme.  Adorable cupcake toppers with the number “6″ were placed on top of the cupcakes since the birthday boy was turning 6 years old.  On the top tier there was an adorable square cake decorated with blue fondant and made to look like a robot face!
  • Sweet Treats. On either side of the cupcake centerpiece were bright blue boxes with splashes of colored dots in yellow, orange and green.  These were all filled with yummy treats like marshmallow pops dipped in orange or blue sprinkles, orange and blue sprinkled pretzels sticks, minature chocolates, robot lollipops and various candy treats.
  • Robot Flags. Robot Flags were inserted into each treat box as decoration and gave the party decorations some height.

3.Guest Arrival and Introduction for Robot Party

  • Welcome Banner. To welcome guests, there was a sign printed in dot-matrix-simulated font that read “Welcome To My Party My Robot Friends”,  followed by multiple squiggly wavelength signs, and the words “…Processing Excitement”.  What a creative way to incorporate the theme and to welcome your guests from the start!
  • Balloons in Theme Colors. Balloons are always a great way to let guests know where to go or to let them know they have arrived at the party location.  Since the party was held at a splash park, balloons are an affordable and easy solution to help decorate the area while creating boundaries for party events in public places.
  • Robot Photo Op. A large robot picture with a face cutout makes a great photo op at the beginning of the party.  Check out the clever idea executed by Lovely, Lovely Things. Another option, get a robot costume for kids to wear for a picture with the birthday child.
  • The Front Door Robot. If you are having the robot party at home, consider decorating the front door like this clever mom from My Many Colored Days did!  Nothing better to have a soup to nuts robot to greet you at the door!

4.Robot Party Crafts

robo part crafts
  • Robot Maze. Start off with a simple activity like a robot maze by Family Fun.
  • Robot Coloring Pages. Another good one is robot coloring pages by Kaboose for younger kids.
  • Robot Foam Crafts. Most arts and crafts supplies stores have foam crafts available.  Try to find ones in the robot or space ship shape.
  • Robot Banks. Oriental Trading has robot bank kits available per dozen and are perfect for birthdays and larger groups.
  • Robot Picture Frame. Give anyone a robot look with this fun foam photo frame! The magnetic photo frame kits make excellent birthday party craft projects for boys and girls.  Take their picture at the beginning of the party and while they are working on the craft, print out their faces so they can take home their projects at the end of the party!

5.Robot Party Recipes

  • Robotwiches. Make robot sandwiches using slices of cheese, eggs, cucumbers, olives and carrots. Place a square piece of cheese on toast as the first layer. Then add two slices of eggs for the eyes topped with sliced olives for the pupils.  Cut up one long rectangular piece of carrot the mouth, and cut up small round salami circles as bolts.
  • Computer Chips. Whoever came up with this one, very clever!  Potato chips labeled as computer chips.
  • Healthy Nuts and Bolts. Instead of the usual chex mix often seen, make healthy carrot shaped nuts and bolts using cheese sticks.
  • Robot Liquid Fuel. Water Bottles with custom wrap or just juice packs.  Got to keep the little bodies fueled up ready for their freeze dance!
  • Pretzel Dip Sticks. Pretzels sticks are easy to grab snack foods for kids. Dip in white chocolate and then decorate with colored blue and orange sprinkles.
  • Wire Cables. Robots need lots of cables and wires to keep things connected.  Get black and red rope licorice for this purpose. Use the red rope licorice for positive (+) and the black for negative (-)
  • Battery Cells. Your average ordinary marshmallow transformed into a battery cell that will turn your kid into an energizer bunny.
  • Robot Party Menu. Here is a sample menu for a robot birthday party:

Robot Birthday Party Menu

  • Robot Sandwiches (Robot shaped sandwich)
  • Computer Chips (Potato Chips)
  • Nuts and Bolts (Cheese sticks and Carrots cutouts)
  • Battery Cells (Double Stacked Marshmallows)
  • Decorated Pretzel sticks (Pretzel Dip Sticks)Robot Liquid Fuel (Juice or Water)

Robot Party Cakes and Treats

robot party cakes
Robot Fondant Cake. A plain square blue fondant cake can be decorated with grey and beige circle fondant cutouts for eyes, and rectangular orange fondant for cheeks, and a smaller rectangular fondant piece for mouth.  Add in antennas to the top of the head.
Easy Cupcake Toppers. Cupcake toppers make an easy decorating option for cupcakes.  No need to fuss with icing or fondant!
Fondant Robot Cupcakes. These fondant cupcakes were made using various colored fondant cutouts and stacked to make to look like robots.  Made by fabulous cupcake guru Hello Naomi.
Fondant Robot Decorated Cookies. Another fun idea found on Kinderplays blog is to decorate cookies with fondant like robots, similar to the cupcakes.

Robot Party Games and Activities

  • Magnet Fishing Game. Fill a large, shallow tray with water and place several objects in them – plastic toys, metal bolts, washers, aluminum foil, match box cars, etc. Attach a string to a “U” shaped magnet and see who can fish out the most items in one minute.
  • Robot Freeze Dance. Play robot themed songs and have kids do the freeze dance.  An adult plays and stops the music randomly at intervals.  Whenever the music is playing kids must dance like robots, when the music stops, they must freeze.  Whoever is caught moving is “out” and game continues until one person is left.
  • Robot Pinata. Save the Robot pinata for the end.  It is a great way to end the party and most kids enjoy it.  However, for much younger kids, a simple take home favor is perhaps more appropriate.

Robot Party Favors

robot party favors
  • Custom Candy Wrapper. Make your own or have custom candy bar wrapper made with your child’s name and with your party theme colors.
  • Robot Favor Kit. Nothing is easier than getting a favor kit already pre-planned for you.  This one comes with crayons, stickers, robot blowout, robot notepad, bouncy ball and glow necklace.  Comes in an adorable robot face take-home box with handle.
  • Robot Favor Tag. Make favor tags to go with your take-home party favor.  Have your child write “Thank You!” on the back or a short note to give it a personal touch.
  • Robot Zipper Pull. A great practical favor are these adorable zipper pulls. Have them made for each guest to take home.  Kids can then add them to their jackets, lunch bags, backpacks, mp3 holders, etc.

Seems like everyone is going green these days but what about for birthday parties? Ever imagine a birthday party without colorful streamers and pre-printed party ware? Why not? Here are some practical, eco-friendly party ideas to help plan your own environmentally friendly party without sacrificing fun!

eco friendly birthday ideas

Eco-Friendly Party Plan

Eco-Friendly Party Invitations

  • Electronic invitations. Use ecards to save on paper or use email to invite your guests.  Although not as pretty or personal, for informal parties this is considered acceptable.  For formal occasions like weddings and black tie events, stick to paper invitations.
  • Recycled Paper Invitations. Purchase recycled invitations and send party information to guests.  Some companies use completely recycled materials while others only have a percentage of recycled materials in their products.  Check to make sure that these companies are indeed using a significant percentage of recycled materials.
  • Seeds To Grow. Send a packet of seeds with a note attached. Write or type “Come and help me grow at ______’s Party!” on one side and put the party details on the back.

Eco-Friendly Party Decorations

  • Zoos, Parks, Orchards or Farms. Have an outdoor party at a local park, zoo or farm.  This way the venue in itself provides the ambiance and setting for the party.  If there is a party room decorated for the event ask to bring your own cloth table cover and partyware.
  • Eco-friendly Utensils and Dishware. Use eco friendly plates and utensils made of environmentally friendly and biodegradable materials.
  • Pots of Flowers. Use pots of flowers as party and table decor.  Let guests take one home as favor at the end of the party.

Eco-Friendly Party Guest Arrival and Introduction

Ask guests on the invitation to bring one book from home that they have already read and don’t need anymore.  Collect them as guests arrive.  Tell guests they can swap one to take home when they leave the party or donate them to the local library or charity.

Eco-Friendly Party Party Crafts

  • Potting Fun. Give each guest a terra cotta pot with flower seeds, soil and a trowel.  Let guests plant their own little garden to take home.
  • Birdie Treats. Make a delicious snack for birds using pine cones, seeds and peanut butter.  Spread peanut butter on the cone, roll in seeds and let harden in the fridge.  Hang on a tree outside for birds to eat.  Great for animals, especially during the cold winter months.
  • Beeswax Candles. Make easy beeswax candles using sheets of beeswax and rolling around a long candle wick.  Cut off excess wick at the bottom and tie a pretty rafia ribbon around the center.
  • Friendship bracelets. Get natural hemp string and make friendship bracelets using natural beads, shells and hemp.
  • Birdhouse. Get a kit to make a birdhouse.  When finished fight the urge to paint the birdhouse since natural wood is the best option for birds.

Eco-Friendly Party Party Recipes

  • Organic crackers. Get Organic Elmo, Big Bird Crackers from your local grocery stores and serve them in BPA free plastic or glass containers.
  • Organic fruits. Cut up chunks of fruit and thread on a skewer for organic fruit kebabs.  Serve chilled or slightly frozen.  Perfect healthy snack on a hot day after a scavenger hunt.
  • Organic juice in cups. Serve juice in glass cups or biodegradable cups instead of using juice boxes.
  • Organic peanut and jelly sandwiches. Make sandwiches out of whole wheat organic bread, peanut butter and if possible, jelly from a local organic farm.
  • Organic veggies and dip. Serve cut up veggies with dip for a healthy fresh crunch at snack time.

Eco-Friendly Party Party Cakes

  • Organic Earth Globe Cake. Use a round ball mold to make a round cake with organic cake batter.  Secure to the bottom of a serving dish with organic icing.  Ice the round ball blue to look like a globe.  Let icing harden a bit.  Pipe light brown icing to make the continents.
  • Organic Flower Cookies. Make or purchase cookies in the shape of flowers using organic ingredients and materials.  Decorate by piping icing on the edge of the cookies and then filling in with various colors.
  • Organic Leaf Cookies. Make green leaf cookies by using a cookie press in a leaf shape, baking it and then finally decorating it with green icing.
  • Organic Brownies. Use organic brownie batter to make delicious brownies.  Use applesauce instead of butter or oil to cut down on fat and to sneak in healthy vitamins into kids’ diet.
  • Mock Flowerpots. Line new, clean terra cotta pot with foil and fill with cake batter.  Bake according to directions in the oven.  Use a pretzel rod to make the stem of a flower, and use icing to “glue” on a flower sugar cookie.  Use fruit roll ups and cut in the shape of leaves.  Wrap around the pretzel rod in various places.  Add a few gummy worms and place inside the pot in the brownie “dirt”.

Eco-Friendly Party Party Games and Activities

  • Nature Scavenger Hunt. Go for a walk in a park, neighborhood or find a trail.  Print out several sheets of the Eco-Friendly Scavenger Hunt List and go on a fun hunt for natural elements.  The average American child does not get enough exercise, recess or physical activity during the day. This is a great way to add some activity while making a walk in the park fun and interesting.
  • Fairy or Leprechaun Houses. Find loose branches, twigs, leaves and rocks to build your own little shelter for our woodland friends, fairies and leprechauns.
  • Water Filtration. Head to a local pond or create your own “dirty water” by mixing soil and water.  Make a simple water filter using a used water bottle, filter and natural elements.  A great challenge for kids to see who can come up with the best filter that produces the clearest water.
  • Potato Sack Races. Collect potato sacks from local grocery stores, consignment stores, or salvation army and have some good old fashion fun and games.  See who can race the fastest from one end and back!
  • Knock those cans. Collect empty soda cans and pile into a pyramid.  Draw 3 lines with chalk from the cans at 3 feet, 6 feet and 12 feet ,for example.  See who knocks down the most cans.  For a challenge, blind fold the player first.
  • Homemade Playdough. Make home-made playdough and let kids have some fun kneading, rolling and cutting with rolling pins, plastic knives and forks.
  • Egg in a Bottle Science Trick. Create some excitement by showing guests how you can magically make an egg fit inside a bottle in front of their own eyes!
  • Tug of War. Get a thick long rope of about 1/2″ diameter and 100′ long.  Divide guests into two teams.  Tie a scarf in the middle of the rope and give each end to each team.  Mark a line in the center of the sand, grass or carpet.  See which team is the strongest and is able to pull most of the rope to their side.
  • Letterboxing. Download instructions to clues and hidden letterboxes all over the world or place your own letterbox for others to find.  Fun and free activity for all ages and difficulty levels.  For more information and instructions on letterboxing go here.
  • Apple Orchard. Take kids to a local apple orchard and let them pick apples.  Come back home and make an apple pie together.  Instead of candy as favor let them take their own mini pie home.
  • 350 Group Picture. What is 350 and what does it stand for?  350 is the number that scientists say is the safe upper limit for carbon dioxide in our atmosphere. 350 PPM (parts per million) is the number that we need to get back to as soon as possible to avoid more climate change.  This organization is trying to find creative ways to educate and inform people all over the world about carbon emissions and have fun doing it at the same time.  Create your own version of a group picture forming the number “350″ by using various mediums and sending it to the organization for their portfolio.  Challenge your group to get creative! {350.org}

Eco-Friendly Party Party Favors

  • Recycled Milk Cartons. Use recycled milk cartons to create recycled party favor boxes and fill with organic candy as favors.  These boxes are decorative and can double as table centerpieces as well.
  • Recycle Old Newspapers. Use recycled old newspapers to make your own simple pinata instead of buying one.  Blow up a balloon.  Make paper mache paste out of equal portions of flour and water, then tear pieces of newspaper and dip into the paste, similar to this dragon project.  Layer in overlapping fashion over the balloon until you have several layers and the entire balloon is covered.  Let dry.  Carve an opening with a sharp knife being careful not to damage the paper.  The balloon will also pop which is fine.  Open the flap and let the inside dry.    Fill with candy and tie the open closed with string.  You can now paint the pinata or decorate with stickers.
  • 100% Recycled Plastic Toothbrushes. Give something practical, useful and without the guilt of wasting plastic.  These Eco Friendly Toothbrushes are made of 100% recycled plastic, and are BPA free.

Dog Gift Baskets

A pet lovers gift for any season!

Creating Dog Gift Baskets is a fun and imaginative way to show your dog or another dog lover how much you care about them. Gift baskets are great gifts for a number of occasions. Obviously, they are great pet lovers gifts for birthdays (The dog’s birthday, Silly!) and they make great dog Christmas gifts, too.

Those ideas are obvious, but have you thought about bringing a cute dog gift basket as a hostess gift when you’re invited to spend a week with a friend in the summer, giving a gift basket as a welcome-home after a dog has been in a boarding kennel, or to help celebrate at a Fourth of July Picnic or a St. Patrick’s day bash?

Of course, we’re here so that show of effort doesn’t really have to take a lot of work. Below is a super-easy primer to have you creating your own fashionable dog gift baskets! Of course, if you would rather order your dog gift basket ready-made, we can help you there too.

1) Pick a Theme for your Dog Gift Basket

Is it a Birthday? Whose? Choosing the right theme is the first key to making a dog gift basket that will be well received on the occasion. Doggie birthday parties are getting ever more popular, so a dog gift basket on such a day might be just the thing to mark the big day.

What about a puppy shower? Think about bringing a few special treats for the expectant mother or for the recovering mother when you go to hug all her cute little puppies.

If it’s the return of the adventurers from a great hiking or fishing trip, why not reward your dog for his hard work keeping your loved ones safe. While you’re cooking venison, he’ll be busy munching on some new dog treats or toys from his dog gift basket. What a great way to welcome him home!

Fourth of July? The kids will all be there, bring a dog gift basket with some patriotic flair and your dog will be the hit of the Independence Day Parade and the water-gun fight afterwords. Who knows… maybe he’ll even stick around for the fireworks. (If not, maybe an anxiety wrap is the order of the day.)

As you can see, there’s only your imagination to limit you when deciding on the theme for your dog gift basket. Whatever theme you choose, make it fun and be sure you can find enough theme-centric basket-fillers to carry the theme successfully.

2) Start at Ground Level: Choose the right container

Choosing a container for your special dog gift basket can be a tricky task, but with a little ingenuity you can handle it with no problem.

One important consideration to keep in mind is the size of the container versus the size of the items you will be filling it with. A huge bag or box might make your array of surprises look small. Of course,

you can easily remedy this problem by filling the bottom of the container with some wadded up tissue paper or shredded paper in order to take up some of the extra space. Try to avoid containers that are very small unless you are only including a few miniscule items in your dog gift basket.

You want your dog gift basket to appear “filled to the brim” but it will be hard to wrap and transport if it’s so full that items are falling out or your container is ripping because it’s overstuffed. If that happens, don’t worry – the dog won’t mind!

A Bag: One easy option is to buy a ready-made gift bag at a stationary store. There are tons of colors and styles to choose from but you’ll probably only have good luck getting a style that’s “in-season” like an Easter themed gift bag at Easter. If you’re trying to plan ahead, it might be hard to find a Halloween themed bag at Easter time. If you don’t want to buy an expensive, professionally-made bag, try decorating a small paper lunch sack with dog stamps, pens or glitter!

A Box: Another idea is to create your own box. Find an old cardboard box of the right dimensions and cover it with wrapping paper that you find attractive. In a pinch, you could use the colorful Sunday comics which are always bright and festive. If you are artistic, or you have children involved, decorate the box yourself, wrapping it with paper you’ve illustrated. You can also writen happy greetings, or glue on images from old holiday cards or magazines.

Something Else: Sometimes the best dog gift baskets come in surprising, delightful wrappers. Try a straw basket from around the house, a Trick-or-Treating pumpkin, or a Santa Clause hat at Christmas time. What about an Irish Bowler hat for the St. Patrick’s day dog gift basket, or a Christmas Sleigh filled with goodies during the Holidays?

Ornate Food Bowls are also fun to try. Just be sure you have some plastic wrap to keep all the goodies in place til the lucky dog gets to open his surprise. Look around your house for unique or unusual items that you don’t use much, sometimes these finds (also available at a dollar store or garage sale) make the very best foundations for an award-winning dog gift basket.

Dogs also get a kick out of receiving gifts in a Dog Treat Jar because they know that after the jar has been emptied of its original contents, someone nice will fill it back up with cookies just for them!

3) Fill ‘Er Up!

So you’ve got a great container – the perfect start to any dog gift basket. Only one problem… It’s empty! That gaping hole is looking up at you in a way more intimidating than a blank computer screen looks to a newspaper writer with a 45-minute deadline.

What to fill it with?

Below I’ve assembled a list of ideas to get you started. Use these as a springboard to launch your creativity.

Treats: Dog Treats are NECESSARY for the dog gift basket or the dog will feel betrayed! Try these great dog treats or make your own. We’ve got a dog biscuit recipe page here on this site.

Try including a few homemade tempting morsels in a little baggie and make a recipe card to attach with a ribbon. These dog biscuits are so good, the dog will want to make sure SOMEONE will make him some more after he finishes the ones from you! Don’t forget the bone-shaped cookie-cutters so everyone remembers those biscuits are for the dog, not the kids!

Toys: Dog Toys are another terrific item to include in any dog gift basket. If the dog is an aggressive chewer, make sure the toys are toys are safe for him. Choosing a toy in just the right color is fun, and dogs like new toys on a regular basis to replace their worn out ones and keep their minds stimulated and bodies exercised.

Bandanas: All dogs like to feel like they’re getting into the act when the family is celebrating a special event. A dog bandana is a great way for him to show his style and these come in a variety of prints. You can buy one ready-made, or use a swatch of fabric from the fabric store, just cut with pinking shears or make a small hem for a longer-lasting item.

Brushes: When there’s a party going on, sometimes dogs forget their daily grooming regimen. A new brush might encourage her to remember to take good care of herself. She’ll want her coat looking good for the guests!

Personalized Collar or Leash: Fifi will love her new collar identifying her as a “Perfect Pooch,” Max will love his “Tough Guy” collar in black. Getting a new collar with the dog’s name or nickname is a great idea. You can also find collars with various prints that may be appropriate for the theme of the dog gift basket.

Doggles: If the lucky dog you’re shopping for spend a lot of time in the sun, or with his head in the wind riding shotgun in a car or motorcycle, doggles might be the perfect gift for him. These outrageously cute goggle/sunglasses for dogs are not to be missed. At least look at the picture, it will give you a chuckle.

Dress-Up Supplies: If the dog in question is a fashion maven, you may be able to go even farther. Pearl dog-style necklaces (LINK) are sure to make a splash. Consider nail polish (LINK), a new sweater, ear bows, or even a Holiday Costume for Halloween or Christmas.

If you got carried away, you could even make a dog spa gift basket and focus on special soaps, shampoo, colognes, soothing mist, or a dog aroma therapy candle.

First Aid Kit: If the pupster is heading off on a trip, or maybe just embarking on a rough-and-tumble summer, having a first aid kit on hand can be a great way to ward off the unpleasantries of nature. If you’re making your own include bug and flea repellant, thermometers, gauze, nail clippers, tweezers, ear cleaning solution and common remedies for poisoning.

People Presents: Even though we all know the doggie is number one when he gets his dog gift basket, it never hurts to include a little something for the person in his life. You don’t want anyone to feel left out. T-shirts, dog mugs, key chains, adorable dog figurines and gift cards, gift cards all make very nice tuck-ins for the dog’s person. You can also find plenty of good ideas in the traditional gift-giving spirit: A noisemaker on Halloween, a dog ornament at Christmas, an American Flag at the Fourth of July and a Turkey-something at Thanksgiving.

Great Reasons To Celebrate!

No matter what the occasion, a dog gift basket is a great way to commemorate it. Don’t forget these Special Events:

Any Time Events:

  • Birthday – Celebrate the Dog’s Big Day!
  • Puppy Party – Any excuse to see those cute furballs!
  • Housewarming – Give the Dog something to chew besides the new furniture!

If you’ve been tasked with planning your friend’s bachelor party, you’ve got a lot of responsibility on your shoulders. What can you do to make this party a suitably memorable “last hurrah?” Whether you’re dreaming of flying everyone to Vegas for a weekend of gambling and debauchery, or you want something more low-key (like a co-ed trivia night), you’ll be sure to find proper inspiration with our bachelor party tips.

Planning and Creating the Perfect Bachelor Party

Bachelor Party plan

A bachelor party for the groom can mark the end of a single, independent lifestyle and the start of the transition into married life. While bachelor parties are usually accompanied by a reputation of drinking and debauchery, there are plenty of new and creative takes on the bachelor party tradition. No matter what happens, the main theme and feeling of the event should be camaraderie and celebration. There are many traditions and different elements to consider when planning the perfect bachelor party.

The best man traditionally plans the bachelor party, while the other groomsmen may contribute as well. There are no set rules for what the party should entail. Whether it’s a one-night blowout or a calm weekend retreat, you can be as creative as you want. It’s a good idea to pick a location and activities that best represent the groom and his personality. For instance, an exotic dancer would be a bad choice for a religious man, while a party animal may loathe a tame afternoon at the country club playing golf.

The attendees for the bachelor party should include the groomsmen, but the father of the bride, father of the groom, brothers, and good male friends of the groom can also be invited. However, remember that any guest invited to the bachelor party should also be invited to the wedding. Having guests at the bachelor party who aren’t invited to the wedding could create confusion or an awkward situation later.

The groom should not have to pay for anything for the party or surrounding preparations, and, in fact, most grooms are typically kept in the dark about the plans as a surprise. Surprises aren’t always practical with work schedules or when traveling is involved, but try to keep some elements of mystery, even if it’s a detail as minor as where you are going to dinner or the guest list. Be mindful of every attendee’s budget in order to plan a celebration that everyone can afford.

Another thing to keep in mind when scheduling the party is to host it well in advance of the wedding. While the night before the wedding may be the traditional date for the bachelor party, everyone will want to look their best and be well rested for the big day and activities ahead—especially the groom. After a late night, especially one involving alcohol, everyone will probably not be at 100%. If your event does involve alcohol, be sure to make arrangements for a taxi or a designated driver.

If the best man or groomsmen want to plan a celebration different from the typical beer and stripper-involved shindig, there are many creative options available:

– Getting everyone together to attend a sporting event for a favorite team of the groom

– Hosting a poker night or hiring a casino dealer for a game night

– A scenic camping trip

– Whiskey or tequila tastings

– A road trip to a fun or quirky destination

– A cruise to an exotic location

– A cigar rolling demonstration

– A guided hunting or fishing trip

– Skydiving or another extreme sport

These are all examples of fun, male-bonding activities that don’t involve strippers or a heinous hangover.

Many modern couples have started a new trend of co-ed bachelor and bachelorette parties where the entire wedding party can be involved. Celebrating together can be something fun and crazy to do before getting bogged down with wedding planning. Some guys choose to skip the party altogether to save money, time and energy before the wedding. It’s all a matter of personal preference. Never force the groom to do something that makes him feel uncomfortable.

While it may seem like a fun and silly tradition, it is still important to put time and planning into a bachelor party in order to make it the best possible experience for the groom. Take the time to research options, organize attendees, and make reservations so that all will go smoothly. It is also a perfect time for the members of wedding party, friends, and family of the groom to show their appreciation for him and to bond before the wedding. These helpful hints and ideas should make for a wonderful celebration.

Alternative Bachelor(ette) Party Ideas

Bachelor-party-planning

While Vegas seems to be synonymous with bachelor and bachelorette parties in recent years, why not break the mold with some alternative plans instead?  If you’re in charge of planning your best friend’s/brother’s/sister’s/cousin’s bachelor or bachelorette party, it’s time do some serious thinking about what you think they’d like to do.  It’s also not a bad idea to check in with them first to see if there’s anything they simply must do on this momentous occasion or something they’d like to avoid altogether.  No matter how well you know them, their answers might surprise you, so make sure you’re prepared for virtually any answer.

Whether you want to help cross a few items off their bucket lists, or want to take them back to a different time altogether with some fun activities from their youth, find a few alternative bachelor and bachelorette party ideas below.

1.Face the Music

Maybe there’s a band that epitomizes the bride’s or the groom’s angst-riddled teenage years. Maybe there’s a band that they used to tour with—or at least that they wish they had. Maybe it’s a band so stellar that its reunion quaked their very existence.  If you’re determined to get them to the show, make sure to get tickets early, especially if they’re in high demand, and do your very best to get backstage passes.  You can’t often buy full-access passes, so make sure to tap into your network early if you think you might know someone who can get them for you.

2.Break Stuff

There’s just something about huge sprays of mud, the roar of engines, and the very real possibility of a fire breaking out at any moment to get the blood pumping.  Take the bride or groom to a monster truck rally or demolition derby for a heavy dose of crunching metal, more horsepower than they can handle, and possibly lingering tinnitus.

3.Death-Defying Escapes

For those who laugh in the face of danger, consider a bungee jumping or skydiving trip.  Make sure to find a reputable vendor in your area and then get ready to “take the plunge.”  If you must, as your bride or groom heads out, go ahead and say it, “You’re about to jump out of a perfectly good plane, (insert bride or groom’s name here)! How do you feel about that?!”

4.Game On

Whether the bride or groom would be more at home in a laser tag arena, plugged into a multi-player game of Halo, or would prefer a game of Scattergories, bring out attendees’ competitive edge with a fun game night.  Include fun prizes and wacky trophies for winners to ensure guests bring their “A” games.

5.Take It Outside

A camping trip may be just what the doctor ordered.  Whether you want to “rough it” by hiking to a secluded, out-of-the-way spot, or you feel more comfortable with nearby plumbing available, a little fresh air never hurt anybody.  Take advantage of your natural terrain by camping out on a beach, in the mountains, or—if it’s the best your area offers—in a friend’s backyard.  Pack foods you can cook over an open flame and don’t forget the chocolate, marshmallows, and graham crackers—no one’s too old or too cool for s’mores.

6.Bat a Thousand

If you’ve got a sports fan on your hands, consider taking your bride or groom to watch their favorite team play.  Looking to get out of town for a few days?  Take a trip to a rival’s city to watch your home team in action on the road.  If possible, try to get some autographed memorabilia.  Professional teams will often have planned autograph sessions, so make sure to keep your eyes open.

7.An Old Dog

Whether it’s a bartending class, a cooking class, or something more risqué, everyone can stand to learn a little something.  If you know your groom wants to learn how to cook more than just boxed mac and cheese for the new bride, or that the bride wouldn’t know how to make a dry martini if you paid her, a little classroom time might be the perfect fit.

8.Host a Roast

Everyone can do with a little joshing from time to time; just make sure guests know the difference between a friendly poke and an outright insult.  If your bride or groom has the skin and the sense of humor for it, invite friends and family over for a nice dinner and a lot of laughs.  If you don’t think you have what it takes to emcee, choose someone you know will rise to the occasion.

These ideas can be a great way to offer your bachelor or bachelorette a little something different.  Break the mold entirely by combining the two and hosting a joint bachelor/bachelorette party if your bride and groom are up for it.

As you celebrate this bittersweet occasion, whether you use one of these ideas or all of them, the most important thing is to make it memorable.  Usher your bride or groom off to marital bliss with a celebration they’re sure to love.

Handling Last-Minute Mishaps at the Bachelor/Bachelorette Party

After months, weeks, or even just a few days of planning, the bachelor or bachelorette party has finally arrived. While you may be excited to get the party started, no matter how well—or not—you’ve planned the perfect event, hiccups can and do occur. Reservations get lost, venues close, and, occasionally, natural disasters strike.

When these things happen, don’t lose your head.  What is done is done, and instead of getting angry, accusatory, or unreasonable, it’s time to get creative, proactive, and resourceful.  Getting hysterical won’t accomplish anything, and can only serve to upset the bride or groom or make alternate plans harder to secure.  You can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar, so getting huffy will only make the concierge, front desk person, or other vendor that much more likely to shrug their shoulders and dismiss you completely.  Keep a cool head and do what you have to do to salvage the moment.

This can be the perfect time to enlist the help of one or two willing and able fellow attendees.  You’ll want to choose people who know the bride or groom well and are not easily shaken.  Having more than one person on-task gets that many more people on the phone to try to figure out alternate arrangements. It can help prevent you from getting frustrated as easily, and, at the very least, it can give you an extra someone or two to vent to if needed.

During a bump in the road of an otherwise-fabulous bachelor or bachelorette party, do your best not to alarm the bride or groom.  Come up with an alternate activity for them while you get things figured out.  It’s up to you whether you’d like to let them know that you’ve hit a snag, but a little distraction can be enough to avert the issue entirely.  Pull attendees aside to let them know what is happening and have them take your bride or groom on a fun outing to keep them occupied. Consider having them hit up the mountain of your snowy locale for a bit of boarding, skiing, or tubing. Take in a little sun on the beach of your exotic location. Book an impromptu spa treatment, or subtly encourage a little retail therapy nearby.  You may have to shuffle around the rest of the event schedule a bit to accommodate, but it can be well worth it to avoid upsetting the bride or groom unnecessarily.

Once you’ve carved out a window for yourself, it’s time to get down to business.  Depending on the hole you have to fill in your event’s schedule, utilize the well-laid groundwork you’ve established with local vendors to establish some alternate plans.  If you’re celebrating out of town, no one will know the area better than the people who live and/or work there.  Talk to the valets, concierge, or front desk people at your hotel to find good nearby restaurants, bars, clubs, spas, or whatever gap you have to fill.  Not only will they know which ones to avoid and which ones have promise for your particular group, they may also be able to make reservations for you or can even get you special deals.  Hotel personnel often have special arrangements with select local vendors to get out-of-town visitors to fill their venues, or have the necessary “ins” that can get you into otherwise exclusive areas.

While these last-minute hiccups are often difficult to foresee and even more difficult to plan for, remaining thorough and persistent throughout the planning process is often the best safeguard against possible problems.

Before you’ve even begun the task of organizing the event, talk to the bride or groom about what they’d like to do at their bachelor or bachelorette party or any particular places they’d like to visit.  You probably know their temperament and personality best, but they may surprise you.  Someone who seems to know about every party being hosted in a three-month window may want a quiet weekend snowed in at their favorite mountain resort, while someone who can usually be found playing board games on random Saturday nights might want to celebrate with a weekend stay at a swanky hotel in Las Vegas.  While you don’t want to give too much away, an ill-planned bachelor or bachelorette party will be talked about for just as long as a successful one, but not nearly as fondly.

If possible, you’ll also want a physical confirmation of your planned activities and accommodations. If something does go wrong, prior printage can help prevent poor performance.  A phone call or two also goes a long way to ensure that everyone is still on the same page.  If you’ve made your reservations online, give each venue on your list a call to make sure it was received properly, as well as another in the days leading up to the event.  A lot can happen, even in a matter of a few days:  a bar can close its doors for renovations, a hotel can sometimes overbook, but a quick phone call can help to put your mind at ease or give the location a chance to rectify the situation if possible.

No matter what happens, chances are, by remaining calm in moments of chaos, you can ensure a wonderful celebration.  In the end, your bride or groom will be surrounded by people that care about them and even if you have to “wing it” a little bit, they may not know it unless you decide to tell them.  He or she will take their cues from the people around them, so show no fear and you’re sure to show them the time of their life.
